PAINTING
HYDRANGEAS
Let me share with you how I painted these beautiful unique florals in a loose style.
These florals can be tricky to paint because of their unique nature. Hydrangeas are made up of hundreds of tiny flowers. However, instead of trying to paint them all individually, it’s a good idea to get a few of these floral shapes within your painting and then you can blur out the rest.
I started with a rich purple colour and used a filbert brush to make the petal shapes. I chose to paint the flowers in a sort of pyramid style, with the most amount of flowers at the base and then as I work my way to the top, the flowers become more blurred and made up of like smaller marks.
In the video, you can see how I make these tiny little floral marks. I carry on making marks with my brush but use a different colour-way.
I also make sure to vary the amount of water I use to get variation in tone and colour.
After painting the hydrangea flower heads I go on to paint the stems and the leaves. I chose a light grey colour for these and also add a touch of blue and green to help the purple and yellow flowers to stand out.
I use my favourite Caran D'Ache gouache palette* for the greens, greys and blues.
For the purple, I used some concentrated watercolours from Dr Ph. Martin's in violet*. The concentrated watercolour just adds a bright boost to the paint
I was gifted some brushes from a company called Golden Maple Art. I chose the sable filbert brushes. These are ideal for painting hydrangeas because they have the perfect round tip. I especially love that they come in different sizes so they’re great for creating petal shapes. I used this smaller brush for creating the flowers.
If you are looking for some filbert brushes at a cheaper price point then these are super handy to have on hand. @goldenmapleart has also shared a discount code with me for 20% off any purchase. Just put my name ‘Aurelia’ in the checkout and the discount will apply.
